Yeastern Cape Brew Club’s Unanimous Hoppy Red Lager

Yeastern Cape Brew Club and Richmond Hill Brewing Company (RHBC) have done some great collaboration in the past but their new Unanimous Hoppy Red Lager is the best by far.

My previous favorite lager was Ink In My Drink Schwarzbier also produced by RHBC and this has now been pushed into second place by Unanimous.

A hybrid in every sense

The labeling on the Unanimous Hoppy Red Lager says, “A beer brewed in collaboration with the Yeastern Cape Brew Club.  Birthed through passion, unanimous decision making, and precise execution.  A beer designed by many, brewed by some, to be enjoyed by all.”

Niall Cook, Master Brewer at RHBC, says, “Not only was this a hybrid collaboration but the resultant beer is also a hybrid.”

Ever heard of a Hoppy Red Lager before? Probably not, but that’s what makes this beer so interesting.

Niall adds, “Our recipe is based on German lager with biscuit and toasty notes on the malt side.  However, the hop profile is that of a red IPA.  Thus the colour and aroma are of an IPA but the bitterness and malt are very much those of a German lager.”

The hops used are juicy, fruity Citra, Mosaic and Ekuanot from the USA.

On paper this sounds like a recipe for disaster but the reality is a very delicious brew.  Light and crisp like a lager but full of flavor like an IPA.

Here you have a beer that is very easy drinking but at the same time very tasty.  Ingenious!

The label design, in the RHBC tradition, is funky and eye catching and each home brewer made a contribution which was beautifully pulled together by  Gqaberha artist, Ashley Reid.

Check out the RHBC online store here or visit them at 2 Alabaster Street, Baakens Valley, Gqeberha where you can buy cans! Click here to find them on Google Maps.
