RHBC Helps Develop Talented Home Brewers

Richmond Hill Brewing Company (RHBC) have won numerous brewing awards including Best Beer In Africa (2023) and they are happy to share their skills with home brewers.

In a previous article we explained how RHBC sells wort to brewing enthusiasts and here we look at two ways in which RHBC have collaborated with amateur brewers and the results of that collaboration.

Home Brew Festival – Singularity Belgium Single

Each year RHBC hosts a Home Brewers Festival where visitors get to sample the wares of local brewing enthusiasts.  The entrants have their brews judged and the winner gets to brew beer on the RHBC big system.

Gerhard Gildenhuys won the March 2023 festival with his superb Belgium Single – Singularity .

Niall Cook, Master Brewer at RHBC says, “Gerhard got an opportunity to see how a commercial brewery operates and how we label, market and sell our beer.  He was part of this process including the label preparation which his face is blended in the design.”

This delicious brew has 6.3% ABV and thus comes with a kick to match its flavor.  To quote Gerhard, it is “something remarkable or unusual …. Judge for yourself.”

Yeastern Cape Brew Club – Maple Danish Pastry Ale

Niall says, “Ten brewers from the Yeastern Cape Brew Club sat around a table and threw ideas together until we came up with an interesting recipe which we named ‘Don’t You Want Me Baby’ which is a Danish Pastry Ale with maple syrup.”

This unique brew also includes cinnamon and lactose to make it desert like and it is nitrogenized to make it creamy. It’s labeling says “Shake Like Hell; Pour Fast; Pour From Height”-everything your dad taught you not to do.  Crazy as it sounds when you follow these instructions the nitrogen bubbles form beneath the surface of the beer and make for a very creamy mouth.

“Everything about this beer was very collaborative.  The brewers came to the initial meeting, then they attended the brew day and finally the launch of the beer,” says Niall.

The bright and equally unusual label probably comes with a long and interesting story. This Ale is sweet and tasty and worth exploring.

Can’t wait to see what comes from the next collaboration.
