Saronsberg Wine Estate - Wine Farm - Tulbagh

Unforgettable wine and hospitality at Saronsberg wine estate

Saronsberg Wine Estate – Tulbagh

Tulbagh is one of those Winelands towns that you wish you had discovered sooner – more so because it is the home of Saronsberg Wine Estate and their famed award-winning Saronsberg Shiraz.

The town is located in the ‘Het Land van Waveren’ mountain basin (also known as the Tulbagh valley) – about an hour’s drive from Cape Town. The basin is overlooked on three sidesby majestic mountains, and is drained by the Klein Berg River and its tributaries.

It is at the foot of one of these mountains that nature meets the art of winemaking at the Saronsberg wine estate, just 10 minutes’ drive outside Tulbagh town. I was surprised on arrival to walk into a modern building as the area is rich in historical structures.

The reception and wine-tasting room had a special charm, especially when you discover the building also hosts an amazing art collection and offers views into the working cellar. Outside is a big open area that overlooks a natural dam – the perfect place for a sunny day picnic with one of the estates wines.

Luciana Raimondi welcomed us with glass of MCC and introduced us to Dewaldt Heyns -the winemaker. He shared with us the history of the farm, his passion for wine making and all the unique factors that have made Saronsberg wines famous.

Accommodation at Saronsberg Wine Estate

After our wine-tasting, we checked into one of their self-catering accommodation – the Saronsberg Vineyard Cottages. I was impressed with the spacious layout of our one-bedroom unit and the clean en-suite bathroom.

It was a typical cold winter day, so that evening we made use of the fireplace that also doubles-up as an indoor braai area. The lounge and kitchen area is open-plan, which made it the perfect space to catch up with our emails and whilst we enjoyed a glass Shiraz.

The next morning, I met with Luciana for a farm tour. She showed me their bigger two bedroom cottage. All the cottages have their own unique décor and ceiling fans or air-conditioning. The linen and towels were crisp and fresh.

Other amenities included an outside braai area, a communal swimming pool with a lapa, conference facilities and a beautiful wedding venue. Pets are allowed on request.

It became obvious – Saronsberg does not only excel in their wine making, but in hospitality too.
