Tropic of Collab: A Bright, Pineapple-Packed Session IPA With a Story

Every great beer has a backstory, and Tropic of Collab from Richmond Hill Brewing Company (RHBC) is one worth telling. This refreshing, fruit-forward Session IPA represents more than just clever brewing—it marks a milestone in RHBC’s journey and celebrates the spirit of collaboration in South African craft beer.

A Collaboration That Started It All

Tropic of Collab was the first collaboration RHBC ever brewed, created in partnership with the iconic Drifter Brewing Company and its master brewer, Nick Bush. Although Drifter no longer brews themselves, their brand and influence live on—and this beer is part of that legacy.

The recipe they developed together struck such a cord that RHBC has circled back to it again and again. In fact, this is the third time Tropic of Collab has been brewed, and each batch leans deeper into what makes it special.

How Pineapple Changed the Game

At its core, Tropic of Collab is a Session IPA, built on classic Citra and Cascade hops—a combination known for bright citrus character and a clean West Coast-style profile.

But RHBC took it a step further with an unmistakable twist: pineapple.

Master brewer Niall Cook explains that in the very first brew, RHBC used whole pineapples sourced from the Sunshine Coast. While delicious, they later found that pineapple concentrate delivers even more flavour, and that’s what gives today’s version its vibrant punch.

You can taste it immediately. Zesty citrus from the hops, juicy pineapple notes cutting through and a touch of acidity and tartness from the fruit that adds complexity and keeps the beer crisp.

At 4.7% ABV, it’s built for warm weather and repeat pours.

A Brew Best Enjoyed Fresh

Like all RHBC beers, Tropic of Collab is best enjoyed as fresh as possible—those hop-driven flavours shine brightest before they fade. Drink it soon, drink it cold, and definitely drink it outside if you can.

The first time I tasted Tropic of Collab was on a scorching summer’s day, and the combination of fruity brightness and that lightly tart finish was ridiculously refreshing—the kind of beer that reminds you exactly why you love a craft brew.

The Legacy Continues

Since that first batch with Drifter, RHBC has gone on to collaborate with numerous brewers and brewing clubs across the country. Tropic of Collab remains a nod to where that journey began, and each time it returns, it brings the same sunshine-soaked energy.
