The Wine Shed at Richmond Hill Brewing Company (RHBC) has a fantastic collection of excellent wine and bubbly.
This hole-in-the wall wine shop is a perfect complement to RHBC’s adjacent tap room. Although the tap room serves excellent brews, beer is not to everybody’s taste. A beer connoisseur may now enjoy a social afternoon or evening with their wine loving friends or partner.
What Makes The Wine Shed Special
There are a number of factors that make the Wine Shed pretty special. Firstly, the wines on offer are handpicked by Nicole Worthington, RHBC’s sommelier. Nicole says that she is always on the lookout for quality and interesting wines that are reasonably priced.
“I travel a fair amount and when visiting the winelands I keep an eye out for great wines that haven’t yet become popular and pricy,” says Nicole.
Secondly, all their wines may be bought for takeaway or for consumption at RHBC. If you choose to drink your wine at RHBC it comes with an ice bucket (for white wine and bubbly) and glasses and the cost is slightly higher than the takeaway price.
Nicole also chooses a wine producer, usually an estate, once a month and RHBC offers a tasting of selected wines from their cellar for tasting. I find this an excellent opportunity to explore some of South Africa’s less well known brands.
“Every month we showcase a different winery and a wine flight of 4 to 6 wines from that estate is available for tasting throughout that month. Once a month we have a wine event which is more formal and tutored”, says Nicole
The wines at The Wine Shed are very well priced too. Nicole says that she focuses on wines in the price range of R90 to R200. If you choose to enjoy your bottle at RHBC then you can expect to pay between a little less than you would pay for a takeaway bottle.
Nicole adds, “A variety of wines by the glass are also available, ranging from R35 to R55 a glass.”Because of Nicole’s ongoing searches, there are frequent changes and plenty of new wines each month. Each visit is to The Wine Shed can be educational as well as enjoyable.
