The Art of Crafting a Perfect Hoppy Red Ale – the story of Psychic Migration

Richmond Hill Brewing Company (RHBC), nestled in the heart of Baakens Valley, has long been a cornerstone of the local craft beer scene. Renowned for its innovative approach to brewing and a steadfast commitment to quality, the brewery has garnered a loyal following of enthusiasts and newcomers alike. Among its latest lineup of impressive brews is their Psychic Migration Hoppy Red Ale.

Psychic Migration Hoppy Red Ale: A Masterpiece in a Glass

At the helm of the brewing process is Brewer Master, Niall Cook, whose expertise and creativity are the driving forces behind most of RHBC’s delicious brews.

Niall’s says, “My vision for this ale was to craft a beer that offered the bitterness and hop character of an American Pale Ale but with darker malts for colour and more complex malt backbone.”

This is a very dark red ale and could easily be mistaken for a porter at first glance.  On the palate and the nose are dark fruit which Niall says comes from the African Queen hop that is produced in South Africa.

Other hops include Nelson Sauvin from New Zealand that give a white wine element, and Sabro hop from USA that adds a stone fruit tone.

It is the malt that provides the beer with its distinctive red hue and a rich, slightly bitter palate.

It pours as a very a deep amber-red with a frothy, off-white head. On the palate, the beer reveals a delightful interplay of flavours. The malt profile offers notes of coffee, dark fruit and berry undertones. The finish is smooth and satisfying, leaving a pleasant bitterness that invites the next sip.

Pairing and Enjoyment

The Hoppy Red Ale is a versatile companion to a wide range of foods. Its balanced profile makes it an excellent match for hearty dishes such as grilled meats, roasted vegetables, and rich stews. On a recent visit to the RHBC taproom I found that the Psychic Migration paired very well with RHBC’s new Apple Beef Burger!

RHBC is more than just a brewery; it’s a community hub. The taproom, with its quirky vibe, wood burning stove and benches and tables has a warm and inviting atmosphere and for bigger groups there’s Chicky’s Yard. The brewery frequently hosts events, from live music to beer education sessions, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared passion.

Cheers to Richmond Hill Brewing Company for raising the bar and crafting beers that truly stand out in the crowded landscape of craft brewing.
