Simonsig Wine Estate - Wine Farm - Stellenbosch

Sampled the cuisine and wines of the Simonsig Wine Estate

Simonsig Wine Estate – Stellenbosch

Situated in the heart of the Cape Winelands in the Western Cape – a short and scenic 45 minute drive from Cape Town, you will find one of the most historic wineries in the county, Simonsig Wine Estate in Stellenbosch.

Visiting Simonsig to eat or for a tasting is a treat as they make bubbly, red and white wines. Whilst Champagne is the name only given if it is made in the French region of Champagne, the Malan family-owned winery produced the very first ‘Kaapse Vonkel’ in the Methode Cap Classique-style way back in 1971.

Despite the exceptional wines and historic value that Simonsig has to offer, it also boasts a restaurant worthy of a visit just for its own culinary exploits. Cuvée Restaurant at Simonsig Estate opened its doors in 2008, and since then has become one of the most popular eateries in the winelands. Its superb cuisine is made from only the freshest seasonal produce and is paired with premium Simonsig wines.

Dining at Cuvée Restaurant

Simonsig Wine Estate - Cuvee Restaurant - Stellenbosch

The restaurant’s picturesque views of Simonsberg have made Cuvée a highlight for those visiting Stellenbosch.

My friend and I recently had the opportunity to visit the Simonsig Cuvée restaurant for a Sunday lunch on one of the Winelands’ hottest days. We were welcomed by friendly staff and our waiter for the afternoon, Josh.

The atmosphere at the restaurant was tranquil and inviting, but we opted for an outside table on the patio under the oak trees to take in the spectacular views of the valley and it was not long before we were sipping away and enjoying their famous ‘Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rosé’.

The restaurant boasts a seasonal menu with only the best quality meat, poultry and seafood obtained from reputable suppliers while their fruit and vegetables are grown from their organics garden. For starters, our attentive waiter recommended the West Coast Mussels in White Marinara Sauce. The mussels were fresh, light and delectable.

For the main course, I enjoyed a perfectly prepared lamb shoulder that was so well-seasoned and tender that there was almost no need for a knife and fork as it just fell off the bone and melted in my mouth.

My companion had their fresh seasonal Line Fish served with seasonal vegetables and a beurre blanc sauce, which was also a hit! We ended up just eating out of each-others plates because we didn’t want to miss out.

With a little space left for a dessert, we shared a beautifully-balanced panna cotta with strawberries, pink peppercorn and a Brut Rose Sorbet, light and refreshing.  Cuvée Restaurant was an amazing spot for our winelands lunch with the Manager and staff making our dining experience a very personal and memorable one.

The service was excellent, with great attention to detail. For families, who have children, there is also a special kiddies menu and outside play area.

From private dining to catered events and function packages, Cuvée also offers a picturesque setting, perfect for hosting your special occasion, conferences, wedding ceremonies and receptions. The reception venue can accommodate 30 to 70 people with an outside dancing area for a day wedding.

From Monday to Sunday, the Simonsig Cuvee restaurant serves breakfast from 08:30 – 11:00 and lunch from 11:30 – 16:00 as well as dinner on Wednesday to Saturday from 18:00 – 21:30.

Bookings can be made on 021 888 4932 or at cuvee@simonsig.co.za.
