La Vierge Apogée Pinot Noir receives Trophy at International Wine Challenge

The International Wine Challenge (IWC) is acknowledged as the world’s most rigorous, impartial, and influential annual wine competition where the judging process assesses every wine ‘blind’ and judges each for its faithfulness to style, region, and vintage.

An IWC medal-winning wine is tasted by a minimum of 8 judges before being awarded.

Not only did the La Vierge Apogée Pinot Noir receive a Gold medal (95-100 points) at the IWC but it was also awarded the South African Pinot Noir Trophy at this prestigious competition.

La Vierge Apogée Chardonnay 2020 was awarded a silver medal, scoring between 90 – 94 out of a possible 100. Only 15 Gold and 90 Silver medals were awarded to South African wines. Out of 6000 awarded wines only 366 across 52 countries received a Gold Medal.

Tania Theron-Joubert, General Manager at La Vierge, said, “We are thrilled by the performance of our two most coveted wines, and the results are testament to our commitment to producing wines of quality which reflects the beautiful and expressive terroir of the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge.”

About La Vierge Wines

La Vierge is located in the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, an area which enjoys cool sea breezes and high rainfall and which forms part of the Overberg Wine Region.

The majority of the vines are located on Babylon Farm which lies further up the valley from the wine making facilities and the La Vierge Restaurant  and their venue. From personal experience I can vouch for the restaurant and would recommend booking a table. The view down the valley is simply breath taking and unmatched.

Ten different cultivars are grown on 44 hectares including Sauvignon Blanc, Sangiovese, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Semillon and Riesling, but it is the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that are best suited to the terroir and climate.

Winemaker Christo Kotze has gained experience in his trade in Australia, the USA and of course South Africa. Tania says, “He has an exceptional palate. Christo is a force to be reckoned with as he sharpens his skills here at La Vierge. We are tremendously proud that this young and experienced winemaker calls our little spot between heaven and earth his home.”

La Vierge wines are sold at their tasting room or online here.
