International Cabernet Sauvignon Day: Raise a Glass to the “King of Reds”

Kruger Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 earns a stellar 96 points, alongside a string of top 2026 accolades

There are few wine varieties that command quite the same respect as Cabernet Sauvignon. Bold, structured and built to age, it has earned its reputation as the “King of Reds”, making International Cabernet Sauvignon Day on 30 August the perfect occasion to open a bottle and celebrate one of the world’s most beloved noble grape varieties.

For Stellenview Premium Wines, this year’s celebration comes with plenty of reason to raise a glass. The Kruger Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 has enjoyed an impressive run of recognition on the international wine stage in 2026, most recently receiving 96 points at the Fine Wine Awards sponsored by American Express.

The accolades continue with 93 points at the International Wine & Spirits Competition 2026 , 92 points at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge 2026 and a Gold medal at the Cabernet Sauvignon Challenge 2026, a collection of results that highlights the wine’s quality, character and consistency across a range of respected wine competitions.

For Stellenview Premium Wines MD, Reino Kruger, the recognition is a reflection of the philosophy behind the Kruger Family Reserve range.

“Cabernet Sauvignon is a variety that rewards patience, but it is equally enjoyable when shared and celebrated in the moment,” says Kruger. “The 2023 Kruger Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a wonderful expression of what we strive to achieve. Concentration and structure balanced by elegance and finesse. To see the wine recognised with such strong results across a number of respected competitions is a fantastic endorsement of the vintage and the work that goes into crafting it.”

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the combination of power, elegance and depth expected from a premium Stellenbosch Cabernet. In the glass, it presents a deep, concentrated dark ruby colour, while an intense bouquet reveals layers of blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry, complemented by subtle nuances of vanilla, clove and mocha.

Full-bodied and generously structured, the wine combines firm yet ripe, integrated tannins with well-balanced acidity, culminating in a long, persistent finish. Matured in small French oak barrels for 16 to 18 months, it has the structure and concentration to develop beautifully with careful cellaring.

International Cabernet Sauvignon Day was created by wine marketer and Cabernet enthusiast Rick Bakas in 2009, with the intention of bringing Cabernet lovers and the wine community together. Today, the occasion gives wine enthusiasts around the world an excuse to celebrate the variety by opening a favourite bottle, sharing a meal or visiting a vineyard.

And Cabernet Sauvignon certainly has plenty to celebrate. Born from a natural crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the variety has evolved from its Bordeaux origins into one of the world’s most recognised and widely planted wine grapes. Its thick skins, naturally high tannins and affinity for oak contribute to the structure, dark fruit character and remarkable ageing potential that have made it a benchmark for fine red wine.

For those looking to mark International Cabernet Sauvignon Day in suitably regal fashion, the Kruger Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2023makes a compelling choice, whether enjoyed alongside a beautifully prepared steak, slow-cooked beef, mature hard cheeses or simply savoured slowly as the evening unfolds.

With its impressive 2026 competition record, this is a Cabernet Sauvignon that has plenty to celebrate, and plenty of reasons for wine lovers to celebrate with it.

Open the bottle, pour a glass, and raise a toast to the King of Reds.
