Deep South Distillery, situated in Kommetjie, is a warm, friendly, and much loved craft distillery with a mission to make the world a better place one sip at a time.
Their award-winning gins, vodkas and rums are hand crafted in small batches, using traditional methods and natural ingredients, many of which come from the mountain and coastal fynbos that surround the area.
The small quirky tasting room and bar is welcoming, friendly and relaxing, where tourists and locals alike can enjoy an authentic tasting experience with inventive signature cocktails across the range of its spirits.
Gin tasting is usually done in conjunction with a mini tour and includes three of their award-winning gins, each paired with its ‘preferred serve’ mixer and selected garnish.
As you build your own gin cocktails, you will come to appreciate how everything you add will change and enhance the taste and aromas of the spirit.
The goal is to create a perfectly balanced gin cocktail that delights all the senses – taste, aroma, visual appeal, and even touch and hearing, as the ice clinks in your perfectly shaped copa gin glass.
Spirit Tasting Experience at Deep South Distillery
Spirit Tasting includes their premium vodka, and their two rums – all multiple medal winners. After sampling the neat spirit, visitors then explore the mixology of adding ingredients to build specific signature cocktails for each of the spirits.
As well as making award-winning spirits the distillery is also known for its innovative approach to a variety of other spirits which visitors can sample. Known as Distillers Curiosities , these include a variety of bitters, schnapps made from seasonal fruit, sloe gins, limoncello, or their smooth, spicy chilli vodka which makes the most delicious Bloody Mary cocktails.
A ‘Try before you buy” at the mini tasting bar gives visitors a chance to sample a mini cocktail or spirit before deciding which one to buy.
Distillery Tours
Mini Tours are guided by one the Spirit Ambassadors, or even the distiller himself, who will explain a little about the manufacture of craft spirits, the key items of equipment, and the different products that are in the process of being made.
A more Technical Tour covers more of the science and technique behind the making of the spirit. This includes information about the practices used in preparing, fermenting, distilling and general spirit manufacture. This tour will typically be of interest to home brewers or other distillers or people in the liquor industry.
The distillery is wheel chair accessible and reservations are important as space is limited.
Customised tours and tastings for private groups and events are available, as well as gin bars and tasting counters at events, market days and festivals.
