Deep South Distillery, situated in Kommetjie in the heart of the Cape Peninsula, continues to gain accolades, medals and awards for its innovative range of artisanal spirits. The distillery specialises in gin, rum and vodka, which are sold under the Deep South brand, but increasingly is attracting local and overseas contract customers who are looking for good quality craft spirits bottled under their own brands.
“We enter our spirits into local and international competitions as a way of independently benchmarking what we do against the best spirits that the world has to offer, and also to showcase the high quality of craft spirits made in Cape Town” says Steve Erlank, owner/distiller of Deep South Distillery. “It is always exciting to win a medal for one of our spirits, and even more so when it is one that we have developed and made for a client. It is really motivating that we can provide our loyal customers with well-made local spirits that are able to compete with products made by huge international brands.”
At the recent Intercontinental Spirits Challenge, Deep South won no less than 8 Gold Medals for its gins and rums, as well as 2 Double Gold medals for an Old Reserve Overproof Arrack and Taprobane Gin for a delighted international client. In 2023, the distillery has continued to win medals in the International Wine and Spirits Competition, Trophy Spirits Competition, Lumo Awards and Merit Spirits challenges.
Focus on Craft!
To qualify as artisanal, most of spirits production needs to be done by hand, in small batches, using natural ingredients and traditional methods.
At Deep South, only natural ingredients are used, fermentation and distillation are hands on, and bottling and labelling are done by hand. The manufacture, settling and maturation of Deep South spirits are allowed to unfold at an unhurried pace, resulting in authentic and exceptional spirits that are made with care and passion.
Deep South Distillery Products
Cape Dry Gin is a bold, beautifully balanced fragrant juniper-forward gin made in a classic dry style and enhanced with herbal botanicals from the unique Cape floral kingdom.
Spice Island Gin is a classic dry gin aromatic and flavourful made with light touches of sweet Zanzibar spices.
Ruby Gin is all natural, ruby in colour, flavourful and aromatic. It is made in a contemporary floral style with rose and lavender dominant; a great spirit to experiment with flavours and mixers to create an assortment of beautiful creative cocktails.
Three Citrus Gin is fragrant and aromatic with citrus zest and citrus flavoured botanicals from the Cape Peninsula. It is a traditional styled smooth gin and a perfect base for a wide range of cocktails.
Premium Vodka is full bodied with a silky smooth mouth feel and aromatic sweet notes; a wonderful base for signature vodka cocktails.
Premium White Rum is smooth and aromatic with bold aromas and flavours of soft caramels and vanillas, with a hint of pepper and pot-still smokiness.
Amber Rum is full bodied and lightly aged pot-still rum with bold aromas and flavours.
Chilli Vodka is smooth, creamy and spicy with warming authentic chilli flavours and aromas, and a hint of chipotle smokiness.
