Rediscover the World’s Oldest Fermented Beverage at Cape Town Meadery

Dr. Ernst Thompson of Cape Town Meadery has been making mead, the world’s oldest fermented beverage, since 2018.

The origins of mead can be traced back to the African bush more than 20,000 years ago, and Cape Town Meadery’s aim is to create a permanent space for Africa’s traditional celebratory drink here in its ancestral home.

Mead is one of the easiest alcoholic beverages to produce and was produced by just about every ancient culture.  However, producing a mead to today’s exacting standards is a different story and this is where the Cape Town Meadery is so good.

The making of mead

A common question asked is whether mead is a beer or a wine. By definition, beer is made by fermenting sugars taken from malted grains while wine is made by fermenting sugars taken from fruits. In contrast, mead is made by fermenting the sugars in honey and is thus in a category of it’sown.

Cape Town Meadery is very environmentally conscious. They use only the finest organic honey sourced from indigenous African forests, and never adulterate it with artificial additives or preservatives.

The product range from Cape Town Meadery is diverse but they are committed to natural flavours only.

After two years of careful research, recipe development, experimental mead making and government applications, Melaurea, handcrafted in the authentic methode traditionelle style, Africa’s first bottled mead was created by Cape Town Meadery.

Since then their range of products has since been expanded to include a host of delicious meads combined with other natural beverages.
