Cape Moby Winery is a boutique wine farm located near Stanford and close to the shores of Walker Bay in the Western Cape.  More than just a winery, Cape Moby has a great story to tell.

The story is not to different to that of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick,  in that they are both about humanity and adversity, friendships, modesty and a close connection to nature.

The two lead characters in the Cape Moby Wines tale are Mariska and Johst. Mariska grew up on the wine farm and Johst, her mentor, is a man with a whale of a heart.

Mariska, as brand ambassador for Cape Moby Wines, says, “We are not only living by the values that Ishmael has derived from his adventure with captain Ahab, and the values that can be derived from the story of our farm. Our winemaking is also inspired by a spiritual connection to Moby Dick and his descendants. We are originated in Walker Bay, precisely where the Cachalot Whales birth their calves during South African spring.”

This is a special wine region as the area is famous for its cold nights and hot days, strong winds and cool rain. The scenery is spectacular thanks to the jagged coastline and rising mountains of Table Mountain Sandstone. Patches of granite, chalk and lime stone rocks make for an interesting terroir.

“Our wines are mostly made from younger vines, that throughout the whole maturation process from field, to barrel, to stainless steel tank, to bottle, are given the opportunity and space to develop structure, and to evolve into the very final product that we are sharing with you,” adds Mariska.

Cape Moby Winery offers a red and a white which may be purchased on line.

The Cape Moby White is pleasantly aromatic with fresh apple, pear and tropical fruit notes on the nose.  It spreads well on the palate with soft acidity and lovely freshness on the finish.

A classic South African blend, the Cape Moby Red is a full-bodied wine with liquorice, red fruit and spicy notes. The wine has well integrated tannins and offers an elegant finish. Pinotage and Merlot contribute to over 75% of this blend with Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot being added too.

This winery is an initiative of Springfontein Wine Estate, which has been producing organic wines for the past twenty years.

Just as Ishmael had a love of nature so do the owners and staff of Cape Moby Winery and thus no harmful pesticides, fertilizers or herbicides are used in the wine making.

Only naturally found yeasts and micro-organisms are used to ferment and assist wines into their final product.

The grapes are hand harvested in order to decrease carbon emissions.

Cape Moby Winery’s motto is that they do not make wines, they guide them, walking hand in hand with Mother Nature.

Guided wine cellar tours are available for individuals and small groups by appointment and as work processes allow.
