Cape Fynbos Wines and Spirits

Cape Fynbos Bubbly Wines are a breath of fresh air

The Cape Fynbos Wines and Spirits first became famous for their excellent gin and its beautiful packaging and labelling.

More recently they have introduced a very funky range of carbonated wines in equally attractive cans.

If canned bubbly wine goes against your classic grain you may want to look at it from a different angle.  Just remember the controversy with screw topped bottles.

Johan du Toit and Oliver Kirsten the founders of this brand, are known for their entrepreneurial spirit and the Cape Fynbos Bubbly Wines are their latest brain child. With their clever packaging, sustainable business practises and ethos, they have made a mark on the global wine industry.

I stepped out of my comfort zone and gave each of the range a tasting.  I also invited a few friends and family to try them out too.

After a bit of hesitation and frowning the older members of the tasting team condescended to try out a can each.  The younger team members, particularly my daughters, took to them like a sunbird to a Protea flower.

I and my fellow Generation X’s were pleasantly surprised and on a weekend getaway into the bush we found them to be our favourite tipple not least because they are robust and easy to pack and carry.

The packaging of the three different wines are a tribute to the beauty and diversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom.  Many of the vineyards of the Western Cape are cultivated alongside the indigenous Fynbos, as both thrive in the Mediterranean climate offered by its unique terroir.

Tertia du Toit, Johan’s wife, is the artist behind the images on the packaging.  She has depicted all their favorite Fynbos plants.

The Cape Fynbos Bubbly Rose is 100% Cinsault, harvested from bush vines in the Voor-Paardeberg and Swartland area.  The Cinsault berries are considerably larger than other grape varieties, with a natural, low level of tannin and acidity.  Coupled with its strong aromatic quality, Cinsault produces a sophisticated, silky and fresh premium rose.

This is perfect for a summer picnic.  The fine bubbles in this delicate rose elevate its notes of strawberry, violets and pink grape fruit.

The Cape Fynbos Bubbly Chardonnay is 100% Chardonnay, harvested from vines in the Voor-Paardeberg and Swartland areas.  A wonderfully versatile white grape, Chardonnay is one the most planted grape varieties in the world, and lends itself beautifully to the addition of fine bubbles.

Served well chilled, this is great for an al fresco lunch.  The delicate bubbles add zip and zest, while complementing fruity notes of gooseberry, white pear and apple.

Cape Fynbos Bubbly Merlot is 100% Merlot, harvested from mature trellised vines in the Bottelary Hills and Stellenbosch areas. With its palate of berries and cherry it is given a fizzy twist with the finest of bubbles.  A red wine fit for a summer’s day.

Cape Fynbos Bubblies come in 250ml cans in packs of four in attractive packaging featuring Cape Fynbos, and may be purchased online or at selected Wine Merchants.
