Brewhogs

Brewhogs, the Repeatdrinkability champions

Brewhogs produce their delicious beers in one of the oldest microbreweries in the country.  In the days when craft brewers were mere hobbyists who worked from a shed in their garden the Brewhogs’s brewery was custom made as a showpiece for Barney’s Tavern in Gold Reef City.

You can read more about its history on the Brewhogs website but needless to say it ended up at Barbeque Corner off Dytchley Rd in Kyalami where it was revived and today proudly produces some very fine lagers, ales, pilsners, IPAs and host of other delicious beers. Head over to their fantastic online store and have a look for yourself!

Brewhogs objective is to produce Repeatdrinkability beers. No, that is not a spelling error, it is a word that may not yet have found its way into the Oxford Dictionary but its meaning is self-explanatory.  When it does reach dictionary status it would probably be defined as “The ability of the last sip of a beer to inspire you to indulge in yet another.”

In my experience this term is very accurate when describing Brewhogs wares.  In fact at this moment I am enjoying a succession of the No.1 Premium Pilsner and the No.2 Original Red Lager.  This correspondent takes his reviews very seriously and always adopts a hands on approach.

Brewhogs No.1 Premium Pilsner

I hadn’t heard the term Repeatdrinkability when I first sampled this brew but I knew from the first sip that this would be a pilsner I could enjoy repeatedly over a slow afternoon while making the Sunday afternoon family potjie.

It is light and fresh with a delicious Saaz hop taste bud tantalizer. There is no heaviness and the fizz is just enough to make it refreshing without being too filling.  The 4% ABV is also low enough to ensure that you don’t spoil the pot when the repeatdrinkability gets some way down the line.

Brewhogs No.2 Original Red Lager

More body than Premium Pilsner and with more discernible flavour, this too is very drinkable.  It is also tastier than many of the mass produced lagers yet as easily quaffed.

Its light caramel flavour would pair well with a good strong curry during the chopping, frying, simmering and of course eating process.

The Red Lager has 4.5% ABV and is naturally filtered, unpasteurised and brewed in the Steam style using five different malt varieties. No wonder it is so tasty.
