Distillery 031 Absinthe

Go on an adventure with the ‘Green Fairy’ when you sample Distillery 031 Absinthe

Founded in 2008, Distillery 031 is a popular craft distillery based in Durban that is owned by Andrew Rall. The team at Thirsty Traveller has sampled many of this distillery’s spirits, from their Vodka and Rum to their Gins.

You can read our reviews of their Vodka by clicking here and read about their Gins by clicking here.

During our annual Heritage Day Spirit Tasting Evening, we recently had the opportunity to sample their Absinthe for the first time. A truly unique version of the spirit, Distillery 031’s Ancestors Absinthe is made in the traditional French style but contains indigenous botanicals that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Origin of Absinthe

Absinthe, also known as the ‘Green Fairy’, originated in Switzerland in 1797 as an elixir. Historically it was a popular drink among artists, writers and philosophers such as Pablo Picasso, Oscar Wilde, Vincent van Goch and Ernest Hemmingway.

The spirit has a unique ability to relax and induce inhibitions without causing drowsiness and is often reported to provide moments of clarity and a dreamlike state of consciousness.

Ancestors Absinthe

As stated earlier, the Ancestors Absinthe is made in the traditional French style and includes the characteristics of anise and the bitterness of grand wormwood. What makes this Absinthe unique is that it utilises African wormwood which has a less bitter flavour than the European version.

Another ingredient they also use is the Impepho herb which is used by traditional Zulu herbalists that gives it a minty flavour.

At our spirit tasting, Graeme from Thirsty Traveller had this to say about Ancestors Absinthe; “Wow, what a powerful spirit.  I want to find a quiet evening all on my own with a glowing fire and spend more time exploring this incredible spirit.”
