A sensory experience at Beyerskloof

Beyerskloof is truly a sensory experience, nestled just outside Stellenbosch, 40 km from Cape
Town, off the beaten track. As I approached Beyerskloof I was greeted by the towering walls of
the Simonsberg mountains, blue skies, and trails of greenery with bursts of Vineyards.

Red Leaf Bistro
Entering the Red Leaf Bistro, I was warmly welcomed by the staff. The atmosphere exuded
family, charm and confidence, creating a cloud of rest. I took a moment to enjoy the panoramic
view; the picturesque setting on the deck set the tone for the rest of my day.
I explored the wine list, and decided to start off with their Pinotage Rosé, paired with a
delectable focaccia. The warm bread and herbs, combined with the bursts of red fruit and floral
undertones, were a prelude to passion: my boots just about took flight.
Next, we indulged in a blackboard special: a delicate, fresh mussel broth that perfectly
complemented our Rosé. The real challenge was choosing from a menu offering a scrumptious
collision of bistro meets master chef with some true South African favourites. We decided that
two meals had to be shared, and I would return to try the oxtail ravioli , and just about everything
else.

Delicious Meal
We opted for the famous Pinotage burger with a caramelized Pinotage onion reduction and
cheddar cheese, this has become my number one burger in the Western Cape. We also had the
ribeye steak served with goat cheese potato puree, chimichurri, beetroot, and pepper sauce,
yes all that goodness on one plate. This dish, paired beautifully with a 2022 Traildust, what an
expression of a true Cape blend, with Pinotage, Cincault and Pinot Noir, a symphony of
elegance, and excellence. Winemaker Anri Truter and Beyers have poured their hearts into
producing an exceptional expression of this Cape blend and dedicating it to all those who have
wholeheartedly contributed to the success of Pinotage and those who have been a part of the
journey. The only disappointment of the day was that I enjoyed my time at the Red Leaf Bistro
so much that I missed the tasting room, just another reason to return.

Wines
I managed to take home two exceptional wines: the Synergy 2021, a Cape blend showing off
the capacity Pinotage has to stand alongside some old world favourite varietals, along with a
Beyerskloof 2021 Pinotage Reserve, a favourite for anyone who appreciates Pinotage. The
seamless ease flowing through the staff, service, food, wine, and surroundings is a testament to
the passion and dedication of the head. Beyers Truter and his family have undoubtedly poured
their all into Pinotage. Despite initial rejections, Beyers had a vision for Pinotage and
persevered, birthing over 11 faces of Pinotage today. After three decades of dedication, one
cannot help but be moved by the fruits of their labour We salute you, Beyers Truter and family.
