Grapeful for the wines!

The winter boots and coats are in high rotation as the cold snap starts to settle in. One thing we are grapeful for, is having mountains of crates of grapes to keep us warm, festive, and looking forward to the next gathering with friends and family.

Since we are friends and think highly of you, we would not want you to be left out of the opportunity to partake in our continued discovery of some of the best local wines. So, we humbly request your presence from the 24th to the 26th of July 2026 at the Prison Break Market for the annual Proudly South African Local Wine Expo.

This is more than an expo; it’s an access-to-market opportunity for Proudly South African members who are in the business of winemaking within the borders of South Africa. Over the past three editions of this expo, we have showcased 30 local wine brands at each edition, 74% of which are black- and female-owned.

The Local Wine Expo goes beyond the sheer pleasure and delight of sampling the finest wines that our vines have to offer. More importantly, it is about creating commercial pathways for local winemakers to reap the benefits of the wine-making industry. According to SA Wine, the local wine industry in South Africa is a significant contributor to the country’s economy, with the industry’s activities generating a fiscal contribution of R19.26 billion economy-wide.

“South Africa is ranked 7th among the world’s major wine-producing countries, with a production volume of approximately 9.3 million hectolitres in 2023. Despite our world-renowned, esteemed wines, the local wine-producing industry is facing challenges emanating from the imposition of 30% tariffs on South African exports to the United States, which is one of the top 10 export destinations for local wine. As consumers, we have an opportunity to celebrate our local production and support the industry and adjacent sectors, such as agriculture, to be resilient and sustainable by opting to buy and support local wine brands. The Local Wine Expo provides us with an opportunity to remind ourselves of our exceptional wines and celebrate our artisanal wine-making skills. We look forward to three days of celebrating wine-making excellence and creating commercial linkages for our wine-producing members,” says Eustace Mashimbye, Chief Executive Officer of Proudly South African.

As the global wine landscape evolves, let’s endeavour to put our local wine front and centre by making purchasing decisions in favour of local. To add to the thrill of the wine-filled weekend, we will be hosting a Shesha game activation – a quick-on-your-feet, general knowledge game – with a local twist. You don’t want to miss this, as there will be lots of prizes to be won!

We are also bringing in Proudly South African members to cater to your taste buds with a variety of local foods and, of course, the perfect pairing snacks too – think cheese, crackers, and biltong. As we discuss the beauty of local wine, discover new winemakers and enjoy a local gameboard. So, it’s a date?

And lest we forget… entry is free, so more money in your pocket to buy a case or two of your new favourite local varietals.
