KWV Raises The Bar As One of SA’s Most Consistent Wine Producers

As local and international wine trade gather under the banner of “Our Warmest Welcome” at Cape Wine this week, KWV steps forward as one of South Africa’s most consistent producers, showcasing why its wines continue to inspire trust both locally and abroad. With a haul of trophies, platinum medals, double golds, and international acclaim in 2025, KWV underscores a track record of consistency across styles, ranges, and markets, proving why it remains one of the most respected names in wine.

In its latest performance, KWV claimed top honours at the Mundus Vini Summer Tasting, where The Mentors Canvas 2022 was awarded Best of Show South African Red. This standout success was supported by 12 additional Gold Medals.

The achievement comes hot on the heels of the Tim Atkin South Africa Special Report, one of the most influential benchmarks for South African wine. Here, The Mentors Canvas earned an outstanding 93/100 points, echoing its Mundus Vini success. Among KWV’s many high scorers in Tim Atkin’s report, six wines distinguished themselves further by also earning Gold medals at Mundus Vini, dual recognition across two respected benchmarks:

The Mentors Grenache Blanc 2023 – 94 points (Tim Atkin), Gold (Mundus Vini)

  • The Mentors Perold 2022 – 94 points, Gold
  • The Mentors Orchestra 2022 – 93 points, Gold
  • The Mentors Petit Verdot 2022 – 93 points, Gold
  • The Mentors Canvas 2022 – 93 points, Gold
  • Cathedral Cellar Chardonnay 2024 – 91 points, Gold

Beyond these highlights, KWV’s Classic Collection Cape Tawny NV was named Best Value Fortified Wine of the Year by Tim Atkin, with an impressive 19 KWV wines scoring 90 points or more.

“These results underline something very important,” says John Loomes, KWV CEO. “Consistency. Whether it’s a Cap Classique for a celebration, a red blend for the dinner table, or a fortified for the end of a meal, our wines deliver quality every time. That’s what consumers can rely on when they choose KWV.”

A trusted choice

Consumers are seeking wines that transform everyday moments into meaningful occasions. With award-winning results across multiple platforms, KWV demonstrates that world-class taste truly has a South African home.

“For us, consistency means meticulously crafted wines from the finest vineyards, with non-negotiable quality attached. When consumers buy a KWV wine, whether from our Classic Collection, Cathedral Cellar, Roodeberg or The Mentors – they know they’re pouring a bottle that can hold its own on any international stage,” adds Loomes.

That unwavering commitment to excellence is not only recognised by consumers but consistently validated on the competition stage. This is evident in KWV’s bumper awards season, with the third quarter of 2025 already stacking up with accolades including:

  • Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards: Laborie Blanc de Blancs 2019 won the African Cellar Supplier Cap Classique Trophy, while Cathedral Cellar Pinotage 2022 achieved Platinum, alongside three Double Gold medals.
  • Trophy Wine Show: Laborie Blanc de Blancs 2019 secured the Sowetan Trophy for Best Cap Classique, with an outstanding 97 points.
  • Amorim Cap Classique Challenge: Laborie Blanc de Blancs 2019 earned Gold.
  • Decanter World Wine Awards: The Mentors Petit Verdot 2021 achieved 94 points.

Quality from vineyard to table

“For both consumers and trade, the message is clear: no matter which KWV wine you choose, you’re choosing a bottle that has proven itself in the cellar, on the podium, and – most importantly – on the table,” says Justin Corrans, KWV Chief Winemaker.

Consistency shaped in the cellar

The 2025 vintage is already being hailed as one of the Cape’s most promising harvests in decades. All the signs point to exceptional wines,” says Marco Ventrella, KWV Chief Viticulturist. “With gradual ripening and seamless operations, we’ve been able to manage fruit with precision. That harmony is already evident in the wines, an indicator of the quality still to come.”

This confidence in the vintage is already showing results: KWV’s strong performance at the SA Young Wine Show offered a first glimpse of the exceptional wines in barrel. Taken together, these achievements bode well for the 2026 awards season, where KWV’s consistency looks set to continue.
